As some people might or might not know, I chose to take an AP Art class this year in school. Basically it's supposed to be some college level art class.
Being naive as fuck I figured it'd be something fun to do, you know draw a little here and some there and it didn't matter what I was drawing exactly. Of course I was wrong though, and it's restricted as fuck.
No-no's:
`No blood whatsoever
`Nothing violent or vicious i.e. Killing, death, fighting, war, genocide, etc...
`No already existing people for portraits unless I have their personal consent
`Creatures are looked greatly down upon
`No references for anything, except animals for anatomy i.e. No cars, buildings, memorials, people, creatures, etc...
`Cliché anything
When put into consideration of what's left to actually draw, it's not much choice at all.
On top of that, you must have 29 images completed sometime in May, and afterwords you have to finish at least one more thing before the school year gets out.
The portfolio is in 3 sections
`Breadth - 12 images - Studies i.e. Value, lines, color, etc...
`Concentration - 12 images - Must be a Series
`Quality - 5 images - Best thing you've ever drawn level, many weeks of work if possible.
This class is so fucking far from what I expected. What the hell is the point of drawing as a form of expression if almost all of it is being taken away? I know this is high school still, but come the fuck on it doesn't have to be THIS restricted.
Okay now you got that out, what does DeviantART or any other online art community have to do with it?
DeviantART is almost no different from the AP class in a sense, I mean yes, it DOES allow slightly more expression.
But many many things get taken off the site or have some major restrictions or are looked down upon just simply by its content.
Some people aren't that great at art, and some are fucking fantastic at it. Some styles are adored and some styles don't have but a few supporters or mature appreciators. It's a fact of life.
Yes, some people do post dumb things as jokes or to piss people off. Then again some people are here to just try to be noticed or something, but it doesn't always happen.
Deviant"ART" doesn't even really deserved to be referred to as an art site in my opinion anymore. I've been here two years and all you see on here anymore is fan-art of an overly obsessed over yaoi couple, or anime show, or doodles of something else utterly retarded.
A good example is the semi-new craze of Sparkledogs
Everyone should know what I mean about sparkledogs. Although wolves are beautiful animals, I don't think people should get paid 40-60 fucking dollars for an over-accessorized winged wolf pup on a piece of shiny paper, when actual talented artists can't even rarely get a commission for something that's actually realistic.
I wouldn't mind it so much if it wasn't for the fact it detracts a lot of attention from people who actually DESERVE it, not some 14 year old that got a hold of some fancy colored pencils and only draws one thing time after time after bloody fucking time. I try to have SOME diversity in my art at least.
About the only way anyone can really express themselves through art anymore is just drawing whatever they want and keeping it solely to themselves, because it won't get any positive attention from anyone else but themselves, so they get stuck drawing that dumb shit that the public likes just to make a fucking living.
I pride myself on what I draw. I enjoy drawing demons, monsters, phobias, bloody scenes, and whatever else that comes to mind. But I'm not naive enough to believe that's what I can draw my whole life and get anywhere with it.
All DeviantART is anymore is just a fucking fan-art site with just a little bit of actual talent mixed in...
That goes for SheezyArt or any other "art" community as well.

Hm... I was hoping they taste something like between shit and smelly socks, but then again being strangled with rope isn't a bad thing. But decapitation is good too.
